Historical architectures of Ho Chi Minh city

The migration of Chinese here from the early years of it' history, the domination of big culture of French and American in the past, in addition to it's Vietnamese architecture manner making Ho Chi Minh a plentiful architecture complex. Visiting these historical architectures bring tourist a colorful look on Ho Chi Minh history, so they are tourist destinations for many visitors to Ho Chi Minh young city nowadays.

Central Post Office
Located right in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City - at number 2, Paris Commune Street, District 1, The Central Post Office is one of the oldest buildings in Ho Chi Minh City. It was built around 1886 – 1891, based on the design of Gustave Eiffel – a famous French architect and has become a significant symbol of the city, just like its opposite neighbor Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral. It has long been the busiest post office of the country.
Being a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance and French influences, this building fascinates tourists by its typical colonial French features, from exterior to interior decorations. By the first time, visitors may feel that they’re brought back to 20th century railway station in Europe, rather than a post office in an Asian country. From its ornate furnishings, gorgeous-pattern-tiled floor to its massively high ceilings and numerous wickets, all speak of another place in time. The interior design is even more elegant with the phone booths, which are just the same since the colonial period.
Walking inside, the first things you notice are the two maps: Saigonet ses environs, 1892 describing Ho Chi Minh City in the past and Lignes télégraphiques du Sud Vietnamet du Cambodge which is the postal route from Vietnam to Cambodia. The building inside is big and airy with a lot of space. The ceiling was designed with arc shape which was carried by the two rows of steel pillars. This makes the building look grander and more stable. Also, the building looks just perfectly in harmony with the outside, considering its arched windows creatively designed with engaged piers, green window shutters or the main entrance with intricate ironwork.
Open from 6AM to 10PM, Saigon Central Post Office is usually included in city tour around Ho Chi Minh, as it’s quite easy to get there on foot, bike or motorbike since together with other French and American architecture it located in the downtown of Nguyen Hue, Le Loi, Dong Khoi street.

Notre Dame Cathedral
Located right front of the Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral is a magnificent building situated at the Cong Xa Paris Square, Dong Khoi and Han Thuyen Streets. Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the oldest and biggest Catholic churches in Viet Nam. It was built between October 1877 and April 1880 in a French style. With the approval of the Vatican, the cathedral was named Notre Dame during ceremonies held in December 1959. Its neon-Romanesque architecture and two 57.6m-high square towers tipped with iron spires dominate the city's sky line, reminds of the cathedrals in Paris. In front of the cathedral is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Visitors can attend mass held three times on weekdays and six times on Sundays

Municipal Theatre
Municipal Theater is located at N°7 Cong Truong Lam Son Street, District 1. It was originally an opera house for the Western audiences. Its construction was begun in 1898 and completed on 17 January 1900 according to the design by architect Ferrt. It holds 800 seats. The cost for the building at that time was nearly 1 million dong (old currency). In 1944 the House was badly damaged by air raids. Then, it became a temporary residence of the French and of Northerners migrating to Sai Gon after the signing of the Geneva Agreements in 1954. It was restored in 1665 and made the seat of Sai Gon Lower Houso of Parliament in 1956. After the liberation of Sai Gon, it was put under the management of the Artistic Performance Organization Company (Sai Gon Concert) and became the City's Opera House ever since. A variety of shows and performances are held in the theater: dancing and singing, spoken drama, circus, and fashion shows. It frequently hosts domestic and overseas professional art troupes. This is also where conferences, seminars and big festivals of the city are held. Investments have been poured into the restoration of the theater to its original conditions with advanced technique to make it capable of hosting performance of greater national and international dimensions. The theater features shows nightly from 8pm to 10pm, on every Sunday morning visitors can enjoy an outdoor concert here.

Thong Nhat Palace
Thong Nhat (or Reunification) Palace is situated at 106 Nguyen Du Street, District 1. Originally called Norodom Palace and Palace of Indochina Governor General, it was built in 1868 and inaugurated in 1873. After 1954, Ngo Dinh Diem, South Viet Nam's President, and his family lived and worked in Norodom Palace. In 1963, this palace was heavily destroyed by bombs. President Diem commanded the remains to be destroyed and to build a new palace to be called Doc Lap Palace or Independence Palace. The new palace was built on a 120,000m2 area and covered 4,500m2. it included a basement, 3 main floors, 2 mezzanines, one terrace, and one upper floor. There are a total of 95 rooms in the Palace, each decorated according to its function. The Palace also features two exhibition rooms, a 33-room guest house, and numerous entertainment services such as tennis courts and stilt houses. On April 30, 1975, the tanks of the liberation army entered the Independence Palace, and the government, including 45 members and President Duong Van Minh, surrendered without condition. After the liberation, the Independence Palace became the headquarters of the city's military administration committee. The political consultation for national unification was held in this palace which was renamed Thong Nhat Palace or Reunification Palace . Nowadays, Thong Nhat Palace has become a historic, cultural relic attracting domestic as well as international visitors. The Thong Nhat Palace is open from 7.30am to 11am and 1pm to 4pm daily.

History
While Hanoi has 1,000 years of history, Ho Chi Minh City is a relatively new settlement. The name of “Saigon” was registered for the first time in documents dating back to 1698. Due to its favorable geographical location, topography, and climate, this area rapidly became a converging point for traders from all over the world.
Saigon Port was built in 1862 and foreign trades quickly became familiar with the Ong Lanh Market, Ray Market, Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Market. For many years, Saigon was praised as the “Pearl of the Far East.”
Ho Chi Minh City is where the heroic resistance against aggressors and the struggling process for independence of the Vietnamese Nation began. It was also where the Ho Chi Minh Campaign triumphantly finished on 30 April 1975. At the first session of the 6th National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, in July 1976, the name of the town was officially changed to Ho Chi Minh City.

Markets foreign should visit in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon)

Ben Thanh Market Vietnam1/ Ben Thanh Market:
Ben Thanh Market (called Saigon Market in these old days) is situated at the intersection of Le Loi, Ham Nghi, Tran Hung Dao Avenues and Le Lai Road, 700m south-west of the Rex Hotel. At first, the market was situated near the Ben Nghe River Dike. It was a brick market with a wooden frame and thatched roof, which was partly damaged by a fire in 1870. In 1911 it was demolished for a more spacious one, which was completed in March 1914.
After being moved many times, Ben Thanh market is now standing in the very center of the city where consumers can conveniently find all sorts of products imaginable. In 1985 the interior as well as the exterior of Ben Thanh Market was completely remodeled except the front with the clock tower, which was kept as it was.
Nowadays, the goods in Ben Thanh market are abundant, including almost all-domestic products - especially those from the Mekong Delta - and modern industrial products from other countries.

2/ Cho Lon Market (Binh Tay Market):
Whenever Cho Lon market is referred to, everyone may immediately think of a Cho Lon - China Town inside Ho Chi Minh City. Cho Lon has become part and parcel of every itinerary to this city.
Cho Lon Market
Tran Hung Dao Boulevard, which connects Sai Gon and Cho Lon is considered the spine bone of Cho Lon.
Cho Lon now covers a vast area from the residential quarters in Districts 5 and 10 to the vicinity of Districts 6 and 11. The Hoa people living there still preserve their age-old cultural, architectural, and religious values. The classical beauty of their architectural style finds expressions in rows of tile-roofed houses, which seem to be caught forever in a brownish gray colour.
During daylight, Cho Lon is bustling with sellers and buyers doing their business. Binh Tay Market, one of the most important markets of Ho Chi Minh City, is located inside Cho Lon. It can be said that nothing is not sold there. There are some hotels and restaurants around here.
When night falls, Cho Lon market seems to rejuvenate. From a distance one can see neon signs of various sizes, shapes and colours. Tourists flock into this area not only for purchasing goods but also tasting the gastronomy of the Hoa. One can enjoy mouth-water-ing dishes as dumplings, boned duck's legs, Duong Chau fried rice, Tu Xuyen tofu and so on.
Tourists also have a chance to explore the other side of Cho Lon. This is its residential area populated by the poor people, with their street stalls lighted under yellowish oil lamps, saddened by the cry of vendors at night. This poses a picture of great contrast.
Such is a panoramic picture of Cho Lon. Come to explore.

3/ Tan Dinh Market
Tan Dinh MarketTan Dinh market is slightly west of the main part of the city, heading generally in the direction of the airport. If you go along Hai Ba Trung past Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Dien Bien Phu, Van Tham park, and Vo Thi Sau, then past the pink catholic church on your left, it’s opposite the intersection with Tran Quoc Toan. You can’t miss it. You can walk there from the Park Hyatt and the Caravelle in 20 minutes. It’s fun.
This market specialty is material. It has all the usual stuff – fruit and vegies, meat, eggs, cosmetics, jewellery, toys, plastic buckets, umpteen different types of rice, dried shrimp – anything you want. But the main reason to go there is for the material. There are dozens of places to buy material in Tan Dinh market, and directly across Hai Ba Trung from the main entrance is a row of shops, all selling material.
There is an endless selection of silks, suit material, cotton for shirts, material for curtains, corduroy, tartans, denim. You can get lots of outrageously bright, highly-patterned material which the Viets use for ao dais and for the pyjamas that women wear in the streets. It’s all there. You have to do a bit of digging around but that it part of the fun. There is no suggestion of being ripped off and most of the material has marked prices. They will tell you how much you need for the item that you want made.
Curiously there are no tailor shops next to the material shops.

4/ An Dong market:
Market in Ho Chi MinhIn Ho Chi Minh City district 5 is the shopping mall Windsor Plaza, An Dong market look like the Spanish chain El Corte Inglés but in Saigon. However if you prefer the atmosphere of a street market and above all, some bargains, specially cheap bargains. You are lucky, because just around the corner you can find An Dong Market, probably the biggest market of the city, inside a 4 floors building (An Dương Vương street, see Ho Chi Minh City map).
An Dong is mainly devoted to textile, clothing, shoes, accesories, handbags, jewelry, imitation jewelry, souvenirs, handicrafts, household, telephony and some electronics. You can find almost everything inside this huge market, even fabric to make a Vietnamese traditional dress.
Floors 1st, 2nd and 3rd are mainly textile, clothing and accessories, but also on the 1st floor you can find jewelery and imitation jewelery. Just as a matter of interest we will tell you on the 3rd floor of An Dong Market they sell winter cloth and coats for the Vietnamese people who will travel abroad, because of the hotter Weather in Saigon we will never need winter cloth or even socks.
On the ground floor people sell spices, food and many other things. If you are willing to cook any traditional Vietnamese dish of the Vietnamese Cuisine, the ground floor is your place (unfortunately you won't find many exotic ingredients to prepare a Exotic Vietnamese dish).
To go to An Dong Market there are just 2 options: taxi or motorbike. For a foreign tourist the taxi is by far the best option. At the main gate of An Dong Market there are plenty of taxis to catch when we finish shopping. From the city center, district 1 of Saigon it usually takes 10 to 15 minutes (depending on the traffic).
5/ Saigon Square:
Near by Ben Thanh market, if you stay in the downtown (district 1) you can just walk here.

The Botanical Garden is located-at 2 Nguyen Binh Khiem, Ben Nghe Quarter, District 1. There are two gates to the Zoo. The main entrance gate is on Nguyen Binh Khiem Road at the corner of Le Duan Road. The other gate is on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Road near the bridge over the Thi Nghe Channel.

Binh Quoi Tourist Village
Binh Quoi Tourist Village is located on the Thanh Da peninsula by the Sai Gon River, in Binh Thanh District, 8km from the center of Ho Chi Minh City. This is one of the city's biggest tourist sites with its unique scenery. There are 55 modern-equipped bedrooms in the village, which nestle under big trees by the river. The village's restaurant is where big parties can be held and famous grilled dishes and Vietnamese traditional specialties can be found. Suoi Tien Tourist Site
The Suoi Tien Tourist Site is located in Tan Phu Ward, District 9, 19km away from Ho Chi Minh city downtown. A tourist site of the Southeast Asian rank, Suoi Tien still preserves a pure, green, and clean environment, which makes it "the lung" of Ho Chi Minh City. It is thus an ideal place for holidaymakers from far and near. The 25-ha Cultural Tourist Site of Suoi Tien includes a sightseeing area, a holiday resort, and a high-quality entertainment area. Inside Suoi Tien, one finds a giant dragon of 400m, and a statue of unicorn. Tourists may visit Flower and Butterfly Grottoes, the crocodile-breeding farm with over 2,000 crocodiles, the 8-ha orchards, or the nice, attractive Square of the Mysterious Palace of Twelve Animals. They can catch a mini-train to tour the site. There is still more. Among them are self-controlled Boeing planes, one 30-meter swing, air-bicycle excursions to the crocodile farm, or high-speed hydroplanes. Visitors to Suoi Tien also have chances to immerse themselves in the poetic landscapes and see the Sea World with hundreds of species of fish, which are breeding in the glass tanks.
